I tested the loading of the background image and tried to see how long it takes for my browser to launch. I am at work, internet is quite fast here at the moment, around 30 mbps as I tested it in http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/.
So it took 2.1 mb of download for a new image, and firebug said it took 4.29 seconds to download and render the image. In my article above I assumed a scenario with 1 second to download the image. The actual case happened to be 4.29x times longer to load.

Today, we used up a lot of electricity, gentlemen.

Yesterday, Google launched their homepage version with background images! So, I will look for on the web if there will be any data that can confirm or disprove the argument I had in this article.

Funny thing, recently a similar conversation got some attention when Google changed its logo to a Pac-Man game. By a study done by rescuetime blog, visitors of Google.com spent 4.8 million hours of human time in one day. Read the summary on Techie-buzz.

I am very surprised to find out about this website ( ;) to my thunder-fast gf):

http://ecosia.org/

Ecosia has a similar concept to go 'eco' on searching the web, by providing users a search engine that donates the money made by click-ads to WWF. Although their site is approaching this more on the business side, it is noticeable that they went through similar calculations to figure out the contribution of the masses. And they use 'rain forest' as a unit for saving. Please watch the video below for the explanation of their 'how it works'. Well, just a minus point from me: they also have background image on their homepage..
